New Research: You Are What You Drink

Healthy Eating:Nutrition Advice
An interesting article was published this month in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: It’s an analysis of adults’ beverage consumption patterns over the past decade, looking at what we’re drinking, and how—and how much—it relates to body weight.

This study seeks to shed more light on the growing controversy around whether sweetened beverages are direct contributors to the obesity epidemic (and, in New York, specifically, whether they should be slapped with a hefty “obesity tax”). Several studies have suggested that our thirst for sugary beverages has contributed to the rise in obesity, but other studies have failed to find any direct cause-and-effect relationship.

In fact, this most recent study found that 63% of adults drink beverages with added sugar on a daily basis. Adults reported drinking, on average, 28 ounces a day—that’s nearly 300 calories from liquids. Sodas were the main calorie culprits, accounting for 60% of the respondents’ beverage calories. (Surprisingly, juice can sometimes be just as bad, or even worse!)

Looking back a decade, the authors found that we’ve increased our liquid calories by 46 calories a day—the equivalent of nearly 5 extra pounds a year. For adults ages 20 to 44, the jump was even more surprising: Calories from beverages added up to 289 calories, up from 203 calories just 10 years earlier.

The authors concluded that the national shifts in beverage calories parallel the rising prevalence of adult obesity and type 2 diabetes. In fact, the study found that among 20- t0 44-year-olds, those with the most calories from beverages also were more likely to be overweight or obese.

Here’s a quick glance at the average daily consumption (per person) of liquid calories in a U.S. diet:

-Soda and sugary drinks: 203 calories
-Alcohol: 99 calories
-Milk: 84 calories
-100% fruit juice: 32 calories
-Coffee/tea: 11 calories

Limiting or avoiding sugary beverages is one diet strategy that many individuals are clearly overlooking. And since beverages provide little satiety value, they are relatively easy to substitute. Need more motivation? Just remember that it takes about an hour to walk off a can of soda. Next time, think before you drink.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta for the US Surgeon General

Dr. Sanjay Gupta (a neurosurgeon and correspondent for CNN and CBS) has been offered the job of surgeon general by President-elect Baraka Obama. Gupta has admitted to the administration officials that he wants the job , and the final vetting process is under way. He has asked for a few days to figure out the financial and logistical details of moving his family from Atlanta to Washington but is expected to accept the offer.
President-elect Obama met up with Gupta in Chicago in November where the discussion took place. He reported that Gupta could be the highest-profile surgeon general in history and would have an expanded role in providing health policy advice.
More info from the Source: The Michigan-born son of Indian and Pakistani parents, Gupta has always been drawn to health policy. He was a White House fellow in the late 1990s, writing speeches and crafting policy for Hillary Clinton. His appointment would give the administration a prominent official of Southwest Asian descent and a skilled television spokesman.

Old Spaghetti Factory

The sld spaghetti factory which has two Orange County locations, is rolling back prices on Tuesday night (Jan. 6) to celebrate its 40th birthday. The chain is also offering 40% off on certain days in January.
On Tuesday, a complete meal, including a salad, entree and dessert, will cost about $3, the chain said.
In college, my friends and I always hit the Spaghetti Factory because it was the ultimate great dinner deal. Back then (early 1990s), you could get a salad, all-you-can-eat bread, a spaghetti entree and spumoni ice cream for about $6.
Today, that same meal deal cost $9 to $10, depending on the entree.
I stopped going to the Old Spaghetti Factory years ago because the wait-time for a table got too long. When you have kids, waiting 45 minutes to an hour for a table makes for a miserable night. (The chain does not take reservations, but does offer “call-ahead” service. Noon Update: Just talked to a Spaghetti Factory representative. She said restaurants will NOT offer call-ahead on Tuesday night because they expect a large turnout.)
Tuesday’s dine-in DINNER ONLY special is good for the following entrees: Spaghetti with Tomato, Meat, Mushroom or Clam Sauce, and the chain’s signature — and my personal favorite — Spaghetti with Mizithra Cheese. Depending on which entree you order, prices Tuesday will range from $2.35 to $3.45 per person. A children’s spaghetti dinner will cost $1.95.
I bet Tuesday night will be pretty hectic.
Also, the chain said all restaurants will offer 40% off Monday & Tuesday on the following dates this month: Jan. 12, 13, 19, 20, 26 & 27. Old Spaghetti Factory has restaurants in Fullerton and Newport Beach.

Murder In The Hamptons:

Murder In The Hamptons:
A Suffolk County Corrections Officer Andrew Reister died Saturday morning after being choked on thursday. An assault by a patron at the Southampton Publick House early Thursday morning led to Mr. Reister to be kept under life support for nearly 3 days. Reister, moonlighting as a bouncer, suffered severe brain damage from the altercation in which assailant Anthony Oddone (pictured above) held him in a choke hold until he fell unconscious. Police report Reister's family was by his side at the critical unit at Stony Brook University Medical Center this morning.

Mr. Reister, 40, was working the night shift at the Publick House on Wednesday, Aug. 6, during "ladies night," when a party-goer became disruptive and combative. Reister had asked Anthony Oddone, 25, of 55 Clover Avenue, Farmingville, to come down off a table when an altercation broke out. Oddone allegedly assaulted Reister, wrestling him to the ground and put him in a head-lock before he was later apprehended fleeing the premises by taxi by Southampton Village Police officers. Acording to the sources.

Mr.Oddone might be charged with murder in the second degree, usually a sentence takes from 25 years up to life in prison. According to CBS news reporter Jennifer McLogan, in Southampton Friday to report on the incident, Oddone was moved to New York City's Rikers Island Jail on Friday to ensure his protection. He is due back in court on Tuesday, Aug 12.According to the Suffolk County Police Department, Oddone was initially charged with Assault in the first degree, a felony, and arraigned Thursday, Aug. 7, at Southampton Village Justice Court. He is being held on $500,000 bail. Amended charges now that Reister has died are not likely to be advanced until the court appearance set for Tuesday. The Suffolk County Police Department Homicide Squad is investigating.First Murder In 20 YearsSouthampton Village Mayor Mark Epley said the incident is "very unfortunate." The murder is the first to occur in Southampton Village since May of 1988. "You think about the volume of people we have come here, the number of incidents," Epley offered. "You'd like to see it be 1,000 years between [homicides]. It's never a good number."

The mayor said in an interview on Friday"No explanation will ever be good enough,". "[Reister] comes from a good local family - hard working, he added. You hate to see a tragedy like this placed on any family." According to Epley, the Publick House has always been good to the community. If the mayor were to rank the places in Southampton where an incident like this were to occur, the local restaurant would be the lowest on his list.Southampton Village Police were called to the Publick House, at 40 Bowden Square in Southampton, at 1:12 a.m. Thursday. Upon arrival Reister was unconscious despite efforts by a number of patrons who had unsuccessfully attempted to stop Oddone. Additionally, some patrons had attempted CPR.The incident reportedly began when the bouncer asked Oddone to stop dancing on a table. According to the police accounts, Oddone held Reister in a choke hold and continued choking him for a significant period of time even after Reister fell unconscious. Southampton Village Police arrested Oddone as he fled in a taxi.Michael Sharkey, Chief of Staff for the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office, said that Reister was an "exemplary officer," having worked in the sheriff's office since April 1994. For the past several years, Reister worked with inmates in the Rehabilitation Unit, where he helped to prepare them to re-enter society after their time in jail. Sharkey said Reister had been recognized in the past by Suffolk County for his work there. A manager at the Publick House indicated that the management of the restaurant has no comment on the incident at this time "out of respect for the family."
